Swap the Snack Crash: Better Alternatives to Ultra-Processed Foods

Ultra-processed foods are often designed to be quick, sweet, salty, soft and easy to keep eating. They can be useful in a busy life from time to time, but relying on them too often may crowd out the foods that help us feel properly nourished.

Research into ultra-processed foods is still developing, but public-health reviews consistently raise concern about diets that are high in these products, especially when they are also high in added sugar, salt and saturated fat and low in fibre.

What to choose instead

Try swaps that still feel easy: toast with real toppings instead of a sweet packaged bar, a colourful bowl instead of a ready snack, yoghurt with fruit, a handful of nuts, or a freshly made lunch with protein and vegetables.

The aim is not perfection. It is simply to choose more foods that look like food: vegetables, grains, eggs, beans, fish, meat, fruit, herbs, seeds and simple ingredients you recognise.
